| Reserve Units Cited For Family Support |
Award Given for Assistance To Servicemember Dependents Washington, D.C.
There was an awards ceremony in the nations capital recently to recognize the support efforts of seven different reserve units for their support of deployed Servicemember families. The awards assembly was held February 15th at the Pentagon at the Hall of Heroes.
One of the seven units that was given recognition was the Marine Corps 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment, 4th Marine Division Reserves. It is a unit based in Chicago, and a member of their family support unit accepted the award for their unit. Mrs. Sharon M. Semrow is a volunteer with the Chicago Reserve unit and spoke about the effort to support families whose Servicemembers are deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
“It is a great honor to receive this award, and we do so gladly. We pass information from the Reserve Command to the families and help with communications overall,” said Mrs. Semrow.
The annual awards presentation occurs every year and highlights the Defense Reserve Family Awards support programs. Dr. Thomas Hall was the host for the Defense Department event; he is the assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs.
“We recruit individuals and then work to retain and support the Servicemembers and their families,” said Dr. Hall. “We work to emphasize families and we plan on working to continuing that effort,” said Dr. Hall.
Each of the seven units that received awards were recognized publicly, and received a certificate signed by Dr. Hall, a wood engraved DoD plague, and $1,000 dollars to their program from the Military Officers Association of America.
