Hippies are credited as tree-huggers, wanting to
protect the plant from wars and non-war dangers like pollution. A more
professional term for earth conscious hippies is the environmentalist. Environmentalists
work in the Navy, National Guard, Air Force, Marines and Army as health and safety inspectors to
ensure that military facilities are receiving clean air, water and food and
manage preventable damage to the environment around military facilities.
 Navy
Training for Hippies
Environmentalists employed by the US Military must
train for nine weeks in boot camp or basic training before further training and
education is obtained. Additional classroom training courses are required in
disaster planning, arming and disarming techniques, chemical and nuclear
detection and defense, disposal ordnances and planning for disasters. Other
training includes learning to defuse bombs, regular drinking water, inspecting
food and water for quality and safety and monitoring the storage, disposal and
transportation of waste.

Hippies
on the Home Front: Putting Experience to Use after the Navy
Experience earned during Military service will help veterans to
gain environmentalist careers on home soil. Environmentalists may seek careers
in their specialty areas; either as crop scientists, waste management
professionals at civilian sewage treatment plants or technicians at water
treatment plants. Environmentalists in the Military can find similar jobs in
their own communities or on a larger scale by working for national organizations
or the government as advisors. Salaries for environmentalists working in
civilian careers will depend upon areas of specialty, training and experience,
though many salaries range between $37,000 and $58,000 in 2006.
