| Job Description |
The Marine lawyer is an integral member in the legal system maintained by the Marines. This officer is primarily responsible for conducting legal research and either prosecuting or defending military personnel in court cases. Additional duties include representing the Marines in civil and international legal matters. Specialties include:
- Claims/litigation specialist
- Government contract law specialist
- International law specialist
- Military lawyer
- Environmental lawyer
Training
To become an officer in the Marines, you must be a current student or graduate of a four-year college or university. You must also complete an extensive training officer course, which may vary in length depending upon your specialty. There are four main pathways to becoming a commissioned officer:
- U.S. Naval Academy
- Officer Candidate School and Officer Training School
- Reserve Officers' Training Corps
- Direct appointments
An indirect path is through the Enlisted Commissioning Programs.

The ideal candidate for a Marine lawyer should:
- Be a U.S. citizen and at least 19 years old
- Have a four-year degree and a law degree
- Be a member of the bar in either federal court or the highest court in a state
- Show self-discipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence
- Be physically fit
- Be able to handle stressful situations and make decisions swiftly
- Show respect for all personnel |
