Job Description
The Air Force lawyer or Judge Advocate officer is an integral member in the legal system maintained by the Air Force. This officer is primarily responsible for conducting legal research and either prosecuting or defending military personnel in court cases. Additional duties include representing the Air Force in civil and international legal matters. Specialties span many areas, including labor, environmental, medical, international and operational law.

Training
To become an officer in the Air Force, you must be a current student or graduate of a four-year college or university. You must also complete an extensive training officer course, which may vary in length depending upon your specialty. There are four main pathways to becoming a commissioned officer:
- U.S. Air Force Academy
- Officer Candidate School and Officer Training School
- Reserve Officers' Training Corps
- Direct appointments
An indirect path is through the Enlisted Commissioning Programs.

Helpful skills
The ideal candidate for an Air Force lawyer should:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have a four-year degree and a law degree
- Be a member of the bar in either federal court or the highest court in a state
- Show self-discipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence
- Be physically fit
- Be able to handle stressful situations and make decisions swiftly
