| Job Description |
Air Force bands need officers to serve as associate conductors, administrators and instructors. The Air Force band program auditions and then selects qualified individuals to serve as music directors. These people serve as the leaders of accomplished musicians who play the music accompanying military parades, ceremonies and other events. They also serve as liaisons between civilian groups and the Air Force
Training
To become an officer in the Air Force, you must be a current student or graduate of a four-year college or university. You must also complete an extensive training officer course, which may vary in length depending upon your specialty. There are four main pathways to becoming a commissioned officer:
- U.S. Air Force Academy
- Officer Candidate School and Officer Training School
- Reserve Officers' Training Corps
- Direct appointments
An indirect path is through the Enlisted Commissioning Programs.

The ideal candidate for an Air Force band officer should:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have a four-year degree in music or music education
- Show self-discipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence
- Be physically fit |
