| Job Description |
The Coast Guard damage controlman plays an important role in maintaining the health and well-being of personnel. This specialist is primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing emergency equipment as well as the watertight integrity of boats and pipes. On cutters, the damage controlman handles emergency equipment used for fighting fires and floods as well as detecting hazardous material. On shore, the controlman works on facility structures and housing units.
Training
Nearly every Coast Guard enlisted soldier undergoes eight weeks of basic training, which consists of basic skills needed for Coast Guard activities. Advanced individual training is usually required for specialization. The length of time needed for advanced training varies depending on the area of specialization. To become a Coast Guard damage controlman technician, you must either undergo an additional 15 weeks of training at an onshore facility or on the job.
