| Job Description |
The Coast Guard gunner's mate is the small arms weapons expert. This specialist works with a large variety of firearms, including pistols, rifles and machine guns. The gunner's mate is also responsible for maintaining all ordnance/gunnery equipment.
Training
Nearly every Coast Guard enlisted soldier undergoes eight weeks of basic training, which consists of basic skills needed for Coast Guard activities. Advanced individual training is usually required for specialization. The length of time needed for advanced training varies depending on the area of specialization. To become a Coast Guard gunner's mate, you must either undergo an additional 10 weeks of training at an onshore facility or on the job.
