Job Description
The Coast Guard boatswain's mate is considered a master of seamanship. This specialist should be able to perform nearly any task regarding deck maintenance, small boat operations, navigation and personnel supervision. The boatswain's mate also may be responsible for:
- Operating hoists, cranes and winches to load cargo
- Standing watch for security, navigation or communications
- Being able to handle ropes and cables for different uses

Training
Nearly every Coast Guard enlisted soldier undergoes eight weeks of basic training, which consists of basic skills needed for Coast Guard activities. Advanced individual training is usually required for specialization. The length of time needed for advanced training varies depending on the area of specialization. To become a Coast Guard boatswain's mate, you must either undergo an additional 12 weeks of training at an onshore facility or on the job.

Helpful skills
The ideal candidate for the Coast Guard boatswain's mate should:
- Be interested in math, electricity and machine shop
- Be able to use the necessary tools
- Have normal color vision
