The Coast Guard port security specialist provides a valuable service in safeguarding national ports or those vital to units overseas. This specialist is not on active duty, but serves in the Coast Guard reserve units as a defense against terrorism or other maritime crimes. Assignments may include support of Department of Defense national defense operations overseas or a Coast Guard Port Security Unit.
Training
Nearly every Coast Guard enlisted soldier undergoes eight weeks of basic training, which consists of basic skills needed for Coast Guard activities. Advanced individual training is usually required for specialization. The length of time needed for advanced training varies depending on the area of specialization. To become a Coast Guard port security specialist, you must undergo at least an additional seven weeks of training in:
- General law enforcement
- Defensive combat techniques
- Communications security
- Operational security
- Intelligence data.
