| Job Description |
The Coast Guard public affairs specialist plays an important role in providing effective communications. This specialist serves as a communication link between the Coast Guard and the public, news media and other government agencies. Duties may involve work in journalism, media relations, web design, photography, videography, public speaking and desktop publishing.
Training
Nearly every Coast Guard enlisted soldier undergoes eight weeks of basic training, which consists of basic skills needed for Coast Guard activities. Advanced individual training is usually required for specialization. The length of time needed for advanced training varies depending on the area of specialization. To become a Coast Guard public affairs specialist, you must undergo an additional 12 weeks of training at an onshore facility.
