| Job Description |
The Coast Guard deck officer takes a visible presence on board the Coast Guard vessels. This officer is primarily responsible for overseeing deck maintenance, small boat operations and navigation. Duties may also extend to coordinating efforts in tactical command, control and communications.
Training
To become an officer in the Coast Guard, you must be a current student or graduate of a four-year college or university. You must also complete an extensive training officer course, which may vary in length depending upon your specialty. There are four main pathways to becoming a commissioned officer:
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy
- Officer Candidate School
- Direct appointments
- Selected Reserve Direct Commission Program
An indirect path is through the Enlisted Commissioning Programs.

The ideal candidate for a Coast Guard deck officer should:
- Be a U.S. citizen and at least 19 years old
- Have a four-year college degree
- Show self-discipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence
- Be physically fit |
