Job Description
The Coast Guard administrative officer is a key member in ensuring operational efficiency in the Coast Guard. This officer may have duties in a variety of administrative roles, from data base management to human resources management.

Training
To become an officer in the Coast Guard, you must be a current student or graduate of a four-year college or university. You must also complete an extensive training officer course, which may vary in length depending upon your specialty. There are four main pathways to becoming a commissioned officer:
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy
- Officer Candidate School
- Direct appointments
- Selected Reserve Direct Commission Program
An indirect path is through the Enlisted Commissioning Programs.

Helpful skills
The ideal candidate for a Coast Guard administrative officer should:
- Be a U.S. citizen and at least 19 years old
- Have a four-year college degree
- Show self-discipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence
