| Job Description |
The Coast Guard scientific officer may play a role in a multitude of areas that protect US ports and marine life. This officer is primarily responsible for overseeing activities that include:
- Examining and inspecting vessels and cargo for compliance with US laws and investigations marine casualties
- Ensuring compliance with laws and treaties by inspecting structural conditions, systems and general conditions of vessels
- Patrolling harbors
- Ensuring environmental compliance
- Enforcing security requirements at waterfront facilities
- Assisting in pollution clean-ups
Training
To become an officer in the Coast Guard, you must be a current student or graduate of a four-year college or university. You must also complete an extensive training officer course, which may vary in length depending upon your specialty. There are four main pathways to becoming a commissioned officer:
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy
- Officer Candidate School
- Direct appointments
- Selected Reserve Direct Commission Program
An indirect path is through the Enlisted Commissioning Programs.

The ideal candidate for a Coast Guard scientific officer should:
- Be a U.S. citizen and at least 19 years old
- Have a four-year college degree
