Helping provide effective and efficient communications is the primary function of the National Guard satellite communications systems operator/maintainer. This specialist helps to keep the lines of communications open. Duties include:
- Receiving and transmitting messages
- Encoding and decoding messages
- Operating telephone switchboards
- Installing, operating and maintaining related communications equipment
- Monitoring and answering emergency calls
Training
National Guard training usually is scheduled to accommodate a member’s civilian life, whether it is for the job or school. Each member first attends Initial Entry Training. After basic training, a solider then reports for Advanced Individual Training, which may vary in length depending on your specialty. Training continues for one drill weekend each month and one annual training period, which is usually two weeks in the summer.
