Job Description
Reporting on the people and events in the National Guard is primary responsibility of the public affairs specialist. The National Guard relies on the public affairs specialist to communicate to the general public and military media primarily through news releases, newspaper articles, Web-based material and photographs. Your duties include:

- Interviewing and researching sources

- Writing and distributing news releases and articles

- Assisting civilian media representatives

- Developing article ideas

- Conducting media training



Training

National Guard training usually is scheduled to accommodate a member’s civilian life, whether it is for the job or school. Each member first attends Initial Entry Training. After basic training, a solider then reports for Advanced Individual Training, which may vary in length depending on your specialty. Training continues for one drill weekend each month and one annual training period, which is usually two weeks in the summer.

- Be interested in English, journalism, communications, computers and photography

- Be effective in verbal and written communication

- Understand the need for accuracy and meeting deadlines
