Job Description
The National Guard translator/interpreter is an integral member of defense efforts on a domestic and international basis. This specialist is primarily responsible for translating written or spoken communication into English. Currently the National Guard needs Middle-Eastern speaking individuals to serve as an interpreter/translator and help in rebuilding efforts. This is an eight-year commitment. Duties include:

- Preparing translated documents into the target language or into English

- Translating oral communications

- Assisting in interpretation at military traffic control points and the National Guard public affairs office



Training

National Guard training usually is scheduled to accommodate a member’s civilian life, whether it is for the job or school. Each member first attends Initial Entry Training. After basic training, a solider then reports for Advanced Individual Training, which may vary in length depending on your specialty. Training continues for one drill weekend each month and one annual training period, which is usually two weeks in the summer.

An ideal candidate for a National Guard translator/interpreter should:

- Have communication skills in both English and a foreign language

- Enjoy working with people
