Assisting in the overall health of Army personnel is the Army dental corps officer. This specialist is responsible for overseeing the dental health of soldiers and their families as well assisting in identifying casualties through their dental records. An officer may specialize in:
· Comprehensive care
· Endodonistics
· Oral and maxillofocal surgery
· Orthodontics
· Pediatric dentistry
· Periodontics
· Prosthodontics
An Army dental corps officer is responsible for commanding and managing a dental corps unit.
Training
An Army dental corps officer must be a graduate of an accredited dental school by the American Dental Association and have a current license to practice dentistry in the United States. To become an officer in the dental corps, you must also complete an officer basic leadership course, which is a basic orientation course to the Army Health Care system, Army doctrine, and basic soldier and leader skills. Training lasts between nine and 14 weeks, depending on your specialty.
