| Job Description |
The National Guard combat engineer is primarily responsible for supervising or assisting the team that provides works directly in combat situations. This team builds roads, bridges or other devices to move the troops. Duties include:
· Constructing trails, roads and field fortifications
· Assembling floating or prefabricated bridges
· Operating various light or heavy engineer vehicles
· Placing and detonating explosives
· Loading, unloading and moving supplies and equipment using planes, helicopters, trucks and amphibious vehicles
· Locating mines
Training
National Guard training usually is scheduled to accommodate a member’s civilian life, whether it is for the job or school. Each member first attends Initial Entry Training. After basic training, a solider then reports for Advanced Individual Training, which may vary in length depending on your specialty. Training continues for one drill weekend each month and one annual training period, which is usually two weeks in the summer.
