| Job Description |
The effective and safe transportation of supplies and personnel relies heavily on the efficiency of the Army cargo specialist. This solider is primarily responsible for loading and unloading materials using such equipment as forklifts and cranes, as well as planning and organizing these loading schedules for both supplies and people. Duties include:
· Using data processing systems to document and check cargo
· Loading and unloading supplies and equipment on shore and at sea
· Operating and maintaining heavy equipment such as cranes
· Packing and crating boxes of supplies for shipping
· Inspecting cargo
Training
To become an Army cargo specialist, you must complete nine weeks of basic training, which consists of basic soldiering skills, and eight weeks of advanced individual training. Classroom and in-the-field instruction covers:
· Techniques for loading and storing cargo and use of heavy equipment
· Techniques for planning and scheduling cargo shipments
· Safety procedures for handling potentially dangerous cargo
Helpful skills
An ideal candidate for an Army cargo specialist should:
· Be interested in working with forklifts and cranes
· Prefer physical work
· Be able to perform general office and business mathematics
In time, you may achieve an advanced level for an Army cargo specialist with additional supervisory and training responsibilities. |
