Job Description
The National Guard general construction equipment operators are integral to the construction of such projects as airfields, roads, dams and buildings. This specialist is primarily responsible for operating air compressors and special purpose construction machines for compaction, ditching, pumping and auguring. Duties include:



· Operating air compressors and related pneumatic tools

· Digging, backfilling and loading operations

· Using self-propelled compaction rollers, earth augers, rotary sweepers and tillers

· Operating a water distributor during compaction and dust control operations

· Assisting combat engineer missions





Training

To become a National Guard general construction equipment operator, you must complete nine weeks of basic training, which consists basic soldiering skills, and seven weeks of advanced individual training. Classroom and in-the-field instruction covers:

· Operation of construction equipment

· Maintenance and repair of equipment

· General construction principles



Helpful skills

An ideal candidate for a National Guard general construction equipment operator should:

· Be interested in operating heavy construction equipment

· Prefer working outdoors
