| Job Description |
Keeping the National Guard mobile is dependent on the work of the railway equipment repairer. This specialist is primarily responsible for supervising or performing maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives and railway cars. Duties include:
• Troubleshooting locomotives for malfunctions
• Repairing cooling systems, fuel systems, exhaust, air brake components, lube oil systems, electrical systems and diesel engine components
• Inspecting, testing and servicing components and systems
• Welding, riveting, caulking, painting and stenciling as necessary
Training
To become a National Guard railway equipment repairer, you must nine weeks of basic training, which consists of basic soldiering skills, and four weeks of advanced individual training. Classroom instruction covers:
• Mechanical, electronic and electrical principles
• Preventive maintenance and repair procedures

An ideal candidate for a National Guard railway equipment repairer should:
• Be interested in mechanics and industrial arts
• Have an aptitude for problem solving
• Be able to use related tools
