Job Description
Keeping the National Guard mobile is dependent on the work of the railway section repairer. This specialist is for performing maintenance on railway tracks, roadbeds, switches, fences and other railway facilities. Duties include:
• Operating and maintaining track motor cars
• Performing repair and maintenance of track, associated rail facilities and adjoining structures
• Repairing roadbeds, signals and switches
• Gauging tracks, properly spacing ties and checking degree of elevation or curvature of tracks undergoing repairs
• Making repairs to fences, crossing gates and sign posts

Training
To become a National Guard railway section repairer, you must nine weeks of basic training, which consists of basic soldiering skills, and five weeks of advanced individual training. Classroom instruction covers:
• Mechanical, electronic and electrical principles
• Preventive maintenance and repair procedures

Helpful skills
An ideal candidate for a National Guard railway section repairer should:
• Be interested in mechanics, railways and heavy construction equipment
• Have an aptitude for problem solving
• Be able to use related tools
