| Job Description |
Keeping the Army mobile is dependent on the work of the railway equipment repairer. This specialist is primarily responsible for supervising or performing maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives and railway cars. Duties include:
• Troubleshooting locomotives for malfunctions
• Repairing cooling systems, fuel systems, exhaust, air brake components, lube oil systems, electrical systems and diesel engine components
• Inspecting, testing and servicing components and systems
• Welding, riveting, caulking, painting and stenciling as necessary
Training
To become an Army railway equipment repairer, you must nine weeks of basic training, which consists of basic soldiering skills, and four weeks of advanced individual training. Classroom instruction covers:
• Mechanical, electronic and electrical principles
• Preventive maintenance and repair procedures
Helpful skills
An ideal candidate for an Army railway equipment repairer should:
• Be interested in mechanics and industrial arts
• Have an aptitude for problem solving
• Be able to use related tools
• Prefer physical work
