Job Description
The National Guard respiratory specialist plays an important role in the health and well-being of personnel. This specialist is primarily responsible for helping manage a respiratory unit, administering respiratory therapy and performing pulmonary function tests. Duties include:
- Examining and treating emergency or battlefield patients
- Interviewing patients and recording their medical histories
- Taking general vital statistics of patients
- Keeping related records
- Administering shots and medicines

Training
National Guard training usually is scheduled to accommodate a member’s civilian life, whether it is for the job or school. Each member first attends Initial Entry Training. After basic training, a solider then reports for Advanced Individual Training, which may vary in length depending on your specialty. Training continues for one drill weekend each month and one annual training period, which is usually two weeks in the summer.
