At the core of the Army Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) is the team of attorneys, legal assistants and judges. A JAG attorney may specialize in criminal law, legal assistance, civil litigation, administrative law, labor law, international law, operational law, teaching, medical law and contract law. Duties include:
• Supervising and assigning branch officers
• Handling services in a specialized area
• Providing legal advice and services to soldiers
• Representing soldiers in legal affairs
Training
To become an Army JAG attorney, you must have a law degree from an ABA-approved law school and have been admitted to the bar of either a federal court or the highest court of any state or the District of Columbia. You must also attend a 12-day military orientation course, which covers:
• Procedures for establishing personnel and finance reports and purchasing uniforms
• Instructions in basic areas of military life
Following this orientation is a ten-week academic course, which covers instruction on the organization, function and mission of JAG and an overview of U.S. Army law. Leadership training continues with four weeks in the Direct Commissioned Officer Course and six weeks in the Basic Officer Leadership Course.
