Military jobs offer salaries competitive to their civilian counterparts. In addition to their starting salaries, the United States military also offers considerable benefits, such as health care provisions and retirement packages. Military pay is determined by rank and time in the service. The longer the individual has been serving in the military, the higher pay scale that person qualifies for. The same goes for rank. The higher rank a serviceman or woman achieves, the higher on the pay scale the individual qualifies for. Rank is earned  differently in each branch of the United States military, but is at least partially dependant upon merit.
The military pay scale is determined by many variable factors. Besides the criteria of rank and time in the service, military pay changes depending on the location each individual is serving in, the type of service provided, whether or not the individual is an officer, enlisted, or reserve, and several other factors. The basic unit of the military pay scale aptly called the basic pay. Basic pay is determined completely by rank and time in service. The United States military pays a salary that combines the rate of the basic pay along with potentially several other financial compensations called allowances. Military personnel can receive several types of allowances depending on what they qualify for, their rank, the total amount of dependants they have, and their completed time in the service.
The United State military offers a Basic Allowance for Housing, compensating military personnel and their families for living expenses. The military prefers to provide housing for military personnel, but that isn’t always possible. When military personnel cannot be provided with housing, the United States military determines a Basic Allowance for Housing based on the individual’s rank, the zip code in which they will be living, and the number of dependents the individual has. Other types of allowances include clothing allowances, subsistence allowances, cost of living allowances, separation pay, overseas allowances, and more.
