Coming Soon to a Military Base Near You: 24/7 Prescription Refills

October 14, 2020

Forget the days of waiting in line with a room full of sick people.

Active-duty military, dependents, retirees and all authorized Defense Department ID holders may soon be able to pick up their prescriptions at the commissary or exchange 24/7.

The Military Health System has decided to rapidly expand their “ScriptCenter” program, which are the prescription pick-up lockers that dispense your medications while you wait.

In the future the units will go a step further with video capabilities and allow you to communicate with a pharmacist if needed.

If you would prefer to still pick up your medication from the pharmacy you can continue to do that as well.

The ScriptCenter units can provide refills on most common medications, however if you need a controlled substance or refrigerated medication you will have to get that from the pharmacy.

To use the lockers you will simply let the machine scan your government-issued ID, confirm your identity with your birthday or fingerprint, and then your medications will be automatically dispensed.

A big advantage of the script centers is that you can conveniently pick up your medications around the clock, not just when the base pharmacy is open.

There are currently 27 units at Air Force bases in the U.S. and Europe.  The Military Health System will be nearly doubling that amount with their rollout over the next year.
