U.S. Senate Committee Approves Legislation to Make Women Register for Draft

July 26, 2021

A U.S. Senate committee has approved language in its annual defense policy bill that would require women to register for the draft.

If the legislation is enacted, It’d be the first time in history that young women would be drafted alongside men in the rare event of a war or national emergency.

The United States has not instituted a draft since the Vietnam War, during which nearly 2 million men were drafted.

Congress has been considering requiring women to register for the draft since 2016 when all combat jobs were opened to female service members.

A U.S. Senate committee has approved legislation that would, if enacted, require young women to register for Selective Service alongside men, and in the rare event of a war or other national emergency, be drafted for the first time in the nation’s history.

…

The new legislation, authored by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed, D-R.I., would remove any reference to “male” in current law, leaving women on an equal playing field.

The decision to make women register for the draft is not going over well with everyone.

Committee member Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) stated online, “American women have heroically served in and alongside our fighting forces since our nation’s founding – It’s one thing to allow American women to choose this service, but it’s quite another to force it upon our daughters, sisters, and wives. Missourians feel strongly that compelling women to fight our wars is wrong and so do I.”

For years Congress shot down the idea of mandatory draft registration for women, but it appears times are changing.  The Senate Armed Services Committee passed the legislation 23-2 last week.

If the legislation survives and the new law is enacted, the changes would officially go into effect one year later.

As a nearly 40 year military veteran; I concur that ALL Americans (regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc) should register for the draft. Let’s not forget, enacting the draft is extremely rare (nearly 50 years since the last draft) and for extreme reasons.

Equality is only equal when it’s applied equally to all. Women stood at the steps of Congress and demanded equality multiple times in our country’s history (right to vote, equal pay, right to serve in combat, and many others) and they were not wrong to do so.

Freedom isn’t free, is paid for through sacrifice and service.

    The following is MY opinion:

Why is this drafting women any different than drafting men?
The majority of the nations currently REQUIRE a two year military service for ALL 18-21 year old PERSONS.
Please note this does not mean COMBAT service — non combat service is available for ALL persons.
All are required to pass physicals and basic training (including weapon training) BEFORE completing their service (think of the Marines basic training requiring weapons training for ALL during basic REGARDLESS of MOS).

    Thanks

I agree totally Todd. There are MANY areas of service where women would be excellent. My Mom was a WAVE in WWII. MANY women performed MANY important services for the military or in manufacturing during those years. Many women serve with excellence in today’s military. Some in combat areas, others in other important departments. I believe LOVE OF COUNTRY expressed by SERVICE knows no gender. A great deal of maturity and common sense comes with military service. Very good legislation.

Choice to serve is key! Choice for any occupation is vital for success!

Women are different! Exposing them to reproductive side effects could be disastrous for our nations future! Ability to choose to serve is patriotic enough!

Women are different when it suits you, otherwise they fuss about being the same.
        Oh, now I get it.

Equality means sharing the responsibilities as well as the benefits.
In the off chance we need to draft people in the future, then all citizens should be eligible, not just those of a specific gender.

I truly believe this is just another attempt by the DEMO-RATS to flex their political muscle AGAINST the American popular opinion. I think it’s Ludicrous at best.
I love the fact that women are taking the initiative to join the Military forces during time of War.
I DON’T love the idea of Cramming it down their throats.

Young women have served along side men for decades without having been forced to do so, women have maintained the family and made great scarface while husband’s are gone for months sometimes years, am I to believe that the people that make and pass these legislations want the America family to exist no more. We as a nation co.mplain about the absence of the father can you imagine the mother being gone! This country needs to revisit its fundamental belief in life liberty and the pursuit of happiness Iam a female veteran of 20.years Iserved by choose not by [email protected]

You can’t have it both ways Senator. If women are to be considered equal in all respects then it is appropriate that they can be called ;upon, as was I in the Korean War, to defend the rights they claim to have.
