I served 6 years 3 in the Navy and 3 in the Army. The last year in Viet Nam. Why then do I have to pay copays when I go to the VA?

I was denied treatment shortly after my Honorable discharge from the Army in 1971. I had a low paying job when I first returned from my service in the Army. I needed a doctor to see me for a back injury. It was not job related and I had no Heath insurance. The VA hospital in Vancouver, Washington refused to see me as a walk-in patient. The person that I talked to at the check-in counter told me that because I was working and not in serious need of treatment. My option was an appointment which had a date more than 30 days from that date. Or if I couldn’t wait, to go to the Hospital emergency.

I joined in 1967 in high school under a 6 month delayed enlistment. I was garanteed lifetime health benefits when I got out and wanted to claim them. I was denied benefits twice before my VSO finally got me in years later. There is no reason to be denied when you serve and have a Honorable Discharge.

Another problem with promises it can all be changed by a new administration with Congress and the Senate. Promises made aren’t always kept. I know when I joined in 1973 I was made the same promise and I retired in 1994. Fortunately I didn’t need it after I got out.
