All Veterans to Benefit from New Act Signed Into Law, Will Get Free Lifetime Access to National Parks

May 19, 2022 28 Comments

An act signed into law gives all veterans and Gold Star families free lifetime access to National Parks.

The act was part of the defense authorization bill which was signed into law.

“When you take your oath, if you go into the service, to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, you really are protecting the homeland,” stated the National Park Service’s new director Chuck Sams. “I think this is a great recognition of that responsibility you took on to serve your nation.”

Back in 2020, the Department of Interior announced that veterans and Gold Star families would get free access to national parks and other public lands, but this law makes it permanent.

Many popular destinations, such as the Grand Canyon National Park and Yellowstone National Park, can now be visited by veterans for no cost.

In order to use the benefit veterans will need to present a form of valid identification, which may include:

  • DoD ID card
  • Veteran Health Identification card
  • Veteran ID card
  • State-issued card displaying veteran status

I’m not sure exactly why but this weblog is loading very slow for me.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end?
I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

Be nice for surviving spouses of 100% disabled veterans to also be given lifetime passes. My husband died due to exposure to Agent Orange. It would also be nice to receive his full monthly benefit, not just a portion of it. Widows have a hard time after loosing their loved onr

This would have been great when we and o children were chronically Homeless for decades. I would think your military I.D. would work for spouses? Any facts from anyone else about spouses using this benefit?

Bless your heart Ms. Jane! The blessing is you at least get a portion… I didn’t get anything. Was told I made too much money. It forced me to go back to work 3 wks after burial and I was a mess.
I would suggest to file an appeal to see if they would increase it for you. Best wishes!

True. My father was MIA/KIA in Laos, 1969/1979. Sad that Gold Star survivors like my mom, RIP and her five kids, get almost zero benefits (no VA mortgages, no Vets hiring preference, no property tax relief) compared to veterans who return home alive from a war, or simply retire never having served in a conflict. What I have learned is that dead men don’t vote. But I do! Vets benefits should be extended to not just living widows, but adult children as well. We are called Survivors of Sacrifice, but not acknowledged by law, as such.

I am so terribly sorry for you loss. I agree with you 100% that not only spouses of veterans be allowed free access but their children as well.

I suffer from multiple issues caused by AO, the worst being cancer of the Esophagus. I will be praying for you and your family for God’s comfort in your life.

I agree with you Jane, I lost my husband because of agent orange also, we had to take care of them and watch them suffer, I think we deserve more than a mere 10% of their pension. We should get some of the benefits they never got to enjoy.

    Is there any efforts occurring
for disabled veterans who received the first separate disability payments in 2003? It took me 10 years to receive my full disability payment. I have a 70% disability. Now veterans with this level of disability get their full payments immediately.

I was unable to serve very long due to the fact of my platoons intertwining with the CIA! What was done to myself and my platoon members was so far beyond wrong it was pathetic! The program was forced upon us and was labeled US ARMY Special Forces Super Soldier Training Program! It was an intertwining of Special Forces and the CIA to try to create Super Human Soldiers! Our DNA was mutated to make us bigger, stronger and faster than most humans! The training was absolute hell on Earth!

Hello Bret, I went into the navy Seabees in 1968 as an equipment operator but after going to Marine combat training I was pulled into the program. I was told I had special talents lol. After 12 weeks I was put into VN for special assignments. I think you know what I am saying. I’m sorry for what you and your platoon went though, it was unfair and unjust. Known of what I was involved with isn’t in any records. Thanks for hearing me out.

Go to your nearest VA Hospital with a copy of your Birth Certificate and DD-214 Discharge Papers and they will issue you an ID They will ask when you served and where you served, etc. you will also need your Social Security card so they can make a copy!

I’m a 6 year veteran, come from a military family mom a captain in the medical field, pop a colonel who swore me in, At 65 I’ve ignored all the signs of truth as to acknowledging the effects of PTSD, brother Iraq, Afghanistan his son also, me Korea military intelligence all 3 of us same system, small world!!! PTSD is something a lot of soldiers ignore, don’t ignore the anger, confusion of behavior that never existed before you may take out some underlying issues that you can’t explain so before your family ends up a victim of something you don’t understand don’t keep silent talk to someone it’s the first step to understanding things can get better ❤️‍🩹

Howard Williams SAID IT!!! IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO LISTEN THERE WILL BE MORE VICTIMS (YOUR LOVED ONES/FAMILY) Its not that we can blame someone for not expanding their knowledge of their own disorders (PTSD/TBI,TBI,TBI,TBI) but if you have them and have read this and haven’t researched the symptoms because you feel it won’t fix your disorder or won’t make you feel better, you better look past that because you can make yourself and people close to feel a lot worse, now…go…

Go to the eligibility office in any VA hospital with valid ID and a copy of your dd214. If you do not have a copy of your dd214 most vet centers can help you get a copy .
